A Seasonal Romance – when Summer Seduces Wine

Wine is a bit like us: a little sensitive to the weather. In winter, it can be heavy and velvety, deep – perhaps even a little melancholic. But as soon as the temperatures rise, it becomes more sociable. Suddenly, it’s blushing pink, sparkling in the glass like Aperol on a diet – chilled, charming, a real summer type. And just as we adapt our clothes, our food and our taste in music to the season, we do the same with what we pour into our glass. But why is that?

What does summer do to wine?

What makes wine feel so right in summer – or rather: what makes summer feel so good with wine? We're taking a not entirely serious, but all the more affectionate look at the seasonal romance between sun and grape. We reminisce about rosé in plastic cups at the outdoor pool, souvenir bottles with sand stuck to the label, and the rise of the Instagram summer wine – more a mood than a drink.

Because wine in summer isn’t just wine. It’s a way of life – somewhere between sunscreen, flip-flops and a late-evening “Should we stay for one more glass?”

Wine in summer is not just wine. It is an attitude to life.

Between park bench and pool party - summer wine to set the mood

You can twist and turn it any way you like: wine in summer is rarely a purely practical decision. Of course, there are recommendations, grape varieties, drinking temperatures – but hand on heart: sometimes you just go for what looks good, sounds good or suits your mood.
Summer turns wine into a symbol. For lightness. For breaks. For that little feeling of ‘everything can, nothing must’. Wine becomes the background music for an evening by the lake, the liquid accompaniment to the first barbecue of the year or the silent protagonist of a romantic sunset. And when the wine flows well chilled into the glass, it is often the most beautiful sound of the day.
Summer wine has also long since developed its own cultural image: It can be more playful, more colourful, more photogenic. Rosé has followed this path particularly consistently – from a long ridiculed filler to an Instagram icon. But light, fresh whites and chilled reds have also found their place on the scene. Who says only sparkling wine can celebrate?
And with the right surroundings – a folding chair in the park, a tabletop made from old wine crates, a few friends and SPF 50 sun cream – even the most uncomplicated supermarket wine becomes a summer wine. Perhaps that's its real secret: it doesn't need much to work. Just sun, atmosphere and company.

Summer wine is not a product, it is a moment!

In the end, summer wine is perhaps less a category and more a state of mind. Not a technical term, but an emotional one. One that doesn’t just describe what’s in the glass, but also what’s happening around it.

It starts when someone says: “Why don’t you stay for another glass?” and often only ends when you’re tipsy and exhilarated on your way home. And sometimes it just lingers – as a taste memory of one of those evenings you wish could last forever.

Because what summer does to wine is basically what it does to us: it takes away its (and our) heaviness. And adds a bit of lightness, warmth – and the good feeling that not everything has to be perfect to be perfect.
