When wine and food go on holiday together

Some combinations just taste like summer. Not because they’re exotic or elaborate, but because they have that certain something: freshness, lightness, a hint of sea breeze or the feeling of a stroll through the market.

And since we don’t just feel summer – we eat and drink it too – it’s worth exploring pairings that capture exactly that mood. Light dishes that don’t weigh you down. Wines that make you crave the next sip. Ideally enjoyed on a balcony, in the park or barefoot in the garden.

Here are five summery pairings that not only taste great but serve up a little holiday feeling – in your glass and on your plate. Including recipe ideas to cook, grill or simply savour.

1. Freshly in love: Goat’s cheese meets Scheurebe

Summer Vibe

A warm evening on the terrace, somewhere between France and Italy, with someone who shares your taste in music. What more do you need?

Dish

Goat’s cheese on arugula with honey, figs & pine nuts

Wine

Schrebe (e.g. from Rheinhessen or Franken)

Sommelier Michael Kutej Recommends:

The salty, creamy goat's cheese likes the crisp acidity of the Scheu, whose flavours of elderflower, stone fruit, citrus and nutmeg provide a wonderful contrast to the sweetness of honey and fig. Insanely juicy and only 11.5% alcohol.

2. Citrus kisses tongue: Lemon chicken & rosé

Summe Vibe

The heat clings to your skin, music drifts through the air, the wine is cool, life is warm — and the food? It’s there. Tasting of long evenings and the feeling that tomorrow will be just as good as today.

Dish

Lemon chicken breast with arugula & parmesan

Wine

A Provence rosé

Sommelier Michael Kutej Recommends:

The dish is light, but gains depth from the parmesan and roasted notes. The creamy, elegant rosé with its long, floral and fresh finish ties everything together with charm. It doesn’t overpower, but it doesn’t fade into the background either – like a perfect dinner guest. Ideal for hot days and spontaneous visitors.

3. Coastal combination with charm: Grilled fish & Riesling

Summer Vibe

A sunset on the beach – or at least by the grill. Sand between your toes optional. But that’s summer, right there.

Dish

Grilled sea bream or sea bass with lemon oil & fennel

Wine

Riesling (e.g. from the Palatinate)

Sommelier Michael Kutej Recommends:

Riesling brings freshness: a hint of salinity, citrus aromas and fine minerality. It's the perfect match for grilled fish – especially when herbs, lemon and a touch of anise are involved. The wine isn’t dry, but it’s not truly sweet either. From the top vineyard Trittenheimer Apotheke and with only 9.5% alcohol, it’s the ultimate summer wine. Also ideal for day drinking.

4. The trio for balmy summer moments: pasta, sun, wine

Summer Vibe

A lunch break in the shade, the tablecloth fluttering gently – no reason ever to open the laptop again.

Dish

Pasta with courgette, cherry tomatoes & ricotta

Wine

Gelber Muskateller

Sommelier Michael Kutej Recommends:

Gelber Muskateller pairs beautifully with vegetables – especially when they come with a Mediterranean flair. The crisp freshness of zucchini, the sweetness of tomatoes and the creaminess of ricotta meet a wine that tastes of herbs and citrus – always aromatic, never overpowering.

5. Sweet, tangy, pure summer: strawberries & crémant for the finale

Summer Vibe

The sun has set, but the mood lingers — you’re thinking about a second dessert or maybe a second glass of Sparkling wine.

Dish

Strawberries in balsamic vinegar & pepper with basil

Wine

Sparkling wine (fine perlage, aromatic)

Sommelier Michael Kutej Recommends:

Acidity, sweetness, fruit and a hint of spice – this dessert is as simple as it is refined. The vintage sparkling rosé from England captures the essence of strawberries, balances the flavours and finishes with delicate floral notes. A true alternative to Champagne.

Summer as it tastes

These pairings are not a strict menu. They are more an invitation. To go out, to hang out and just enjoy. Whether you cook everything or just crack open the wine is not so important. The main thing is that it feels like summer. And if it tastes good - all the better.
